Seattle Desktop Publishing Classes

A full DeskTop Publishing (DTP) workflow requires many tools and skills. These classes cover the breadth of both, from massaging photographic images to the creation of logos and graphics to the final assembly and output of large documents.

And although the focus of many of these tools has traditionally been print, we are sure to include electronic publishing as well.

Graphic Design Overview

A discussion-driven class on design principles and fundamentals for those who would like a quick but solid overview of compositional rules and principles.

Desktop Publishing Overview

$149 — Skill Level: Introductory — one–half day, 9:30am–12:30pm

Required knowledge for learning InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Learn the terms and concepts required to build publications, edit images, and create logos and other graphics. We'll talk about and briefly explore each of these software applications as well as learn about color, file formats, resolution, and more. If you have some experience with these ideas and know the role each program plays, you may skip this class.

InDesign CS5.5 Essentials

Get started with the page layout tool that is used to create everything from business cards to large books.

InDesign CS5.5: Publication Strategies

$275 — Skill Level: 2 — one day, 9:30am–4:30pm

Harness the complex and puzzling array of possibilities that InDesign offers, to create a more controlled workflow. Improve your design and production process by maximizing efficiency with its built-in tools. Many of these are features are unfamiliar to the casual user; this class will elevate your Indesign skills to the "power user" level.

Build publications readable on iPads, Kindles, and other eReaders with the ePub and mobi formats and create iPad magazines with the tools used by Wired, Martha Steward, Lady Gaga and many more: Adobe's Digital Publishing Suite

Photoshop CS5 Essentials

We'll examine the most important aspects of this application emphasizing best practices: from image and adjustment layers, to basic selections, masking, and effects.

Photoshop CS5 Creative Imagery

$275 — Skill Level: 2 — one day, 9:30am–4:30pm

Craft composite images, or create images from scratch! Sculpt, alter and combinephotos, add artwork from Illustrator (or your drawn and painted media), and use Layer Styles masterfully to create images with depth, atmosphere, and mood. Creating and Editing PDFs

In this class you will discover how to make PDFs from many kinds of source documents to create digital brochures and newsletters, email attachments and more. The mystery of what settings to use and the best practices to save trouble down the road will all be discussed in this hands-on class.

Using and Creating Forms in Acrobat

This class explores the fundamentals and flexibility of Acrobat forms, and de-mystifies using fields, form distribution, and data collection. We also show you how to utilize the convenient built-in form creation tools available in Acrobat 10.

Interactive PDFs in Acrobat and InDesign

Acrobat 10 Pro has the ability to integrate JavaScript, multimedia, and Flash within interactive PDFs. In this class, we'll show you how to create a multimedia PDF, using InDesign and Acrobat's interactive features such as buttons, roll overs, and pop ups. We'll also teach you how to embed and enable multimedia files such as audio, video and Flash within the PDF.

Digital Drawing Workshop

Just about every graphics program has a challenging but essential technical drawing tool called the Pen Tool. Starting with the insight and hands-on practice this class provides, one can use this tool to generate any arbitrary shape. Learn to create with the Adobe Pen Tool in Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Flash.
